HERITAGE ON SUNDAY - The Wheel Deal - 18 September 2022

The weather was a bit poor, but 77 visitors had a 'wheely' good time discovering wheels and their various uses throughout the Museum.

It started with a Chevrolet parked in front and a Sunbeam motorbike on the front porch. Each room in the main building invited you to explore what wheels were in use in daily life. Many participants tried our 'chocolate wheel' - everyone got a prize! Those having Devonshire tea also enjoyed some 'Wheely Funny' jokes.

Outside it got even more interesting, with several penny-farthings and a delivery bicycle (thanks to the Penny-Farthing Cycle Club of South Australia Inc.)
Past the wine and transport displays, with their heavy wagon wheels, were two more vintage motor bikes and three cars.

Our resident blacksmith, Fred, led a demonstration of installing a metal tyre on a wooden wheel. The circle of metal is expanded first by heating over coals. Once poitioned around the wooden wheel it is cooled qickly with water before it starts burning the wood. What else can you do with a heap of hot coals? Lucky spectators got a toasted marshmallow!
